The resort of Golden Sands is the largest one on the Northern Black Sea coast (more than 1800 hectares). It is situated 19 km north-east of Varna, 490 km east of Sofia. Nowadays only a small part of the frescoes are preserved but the experience of being in a monastery nestled on a high steep rock is unforgettable. The monastery is declared a cultural sight and houses a small museum.

Golden Sands offers you and your family exellent holiday conditions with lots of entertainment, sports and new encounters.
The resort is 18 km north of Varna. It is located on the territory of Golden Sands National Park and nestled among groves of rare tree species. The beach, covered with fine golden sand, stretches for some 3,5 km and sometimes reaches the width of 100 m. The sea is clear and calm, sunbathing is possible from May until October.
The average air temperature at Varna daytime in the summer is 27°C and the wather temperature is 24°C.
The resort adjoins Zlatni Piasatsi National Park. Opened in 1943, it is one of the oldest and smallest parks in the country and features a diversity of flora and fauna that includes deer, wild boar and eagles.
What To Do
In addition to the myriad assortment of beach and water sports offered by the resort and hotels, there are indoor and outdoor swimming pools, sport and fitness centers, kids playgrounds, balneology treatment centers, horseback riding, mini-golf and a dozen tennis courts. The extreme sports addict can get an adrenaline rush with the likes of motorized hanggliding or scooter-driven parachuting; those less physically inclined can support the local economy by frequenting the numerous shopping arcades and outdoor bazaars.

Aladzha Monastery, midway between Golden Sands and the village of Vinitsa (reached by local bus #330), consists of 40-meter-high limestone cliffs pockmarked with caves that have been inhabited since the Stone Ages. During medieval times, the caves served as rock churches and were home to hermetic monks. Visitors can tour the monastic cells and tiny rock chapel; the walls of the latter are covered with faded frescoes. There is a small museum/art gallery near the entrance (open June-October, entrance fee $1).
Getting There
Golden Sands is located 17 kms north of Varna. From Varna's city center, buses #9 and #109 go directly to the resort. Taxis are prevalent but watch the meter as they tend to overcharge gullible foreigners. From the sea terminal, hydrobuses stop at Golden Sands enroute to and from Balchik. |
